Bereavement Care: Forget Me Not

Forget Me Not is a program for grieving children and teens (ages 4-19) that offers age-appropriate support.  Programs are delivered in response to referrals from schools and the community.  Groups have ranged in age from elementary school to high school and are often a collaborative effort with schools, concerned teachers or counselors and agencies such as Queen Liliuokalani Children’s Center.  Kaua‘i Hospice also responds to requests from schools for bereavement support to families, classmates, teachers and administrators when suicides, accidents and other unexpected deaths occur.

The Forget Me Not program serves as an umbrella program for two very unique projects.  The first project is Camp Na Puuwai Ola (Healing Hearts).  The camp, a collaborative effort between the Hospice and the Queen Liliuokalani Children’s Center, was designed for children ages 7-17 who are grieving the death of a loved one.  This Camp, like our support groups, is not designed to end the sorrow the children are feeling; instead it gives them tools to endure the journey ahead.  The all-day camp held on Kaua‘i Hospice grounds gives children the opportunity to explore their feelings surrounding the death of their loved ones through activities and interactive play while in a safe and nurturing environment.

The second project is The Good Grief Club.  This Club is a new peer support group for children ages 9-13 who are currently grieving the death of a loved one.  This six-session program lasts approximately nine weeks and consists of group activities that foster healthy grieving and coping, team building, and family strengthening events.  Both programs are free of charge and require parental/family participation.
