Kaua‘i Hospice Staff Margaret P. Kahalehoe-Bair, CNA Certified Nurse's Aide
My name is Margaret P. Kahalehoe-Bair. The families and patients that I care for call me “Nani”.
I was born and raised in Maui. I graduated from Maui High School. After a couple of years, I started working at Kula Hospital as a nurse’s aide and have been working for the State Hospital System for almost 25 years. I’ve worked for Interim Health Services, then Kaua'i Hospice. I’ve been with Kaua'i Hospice for over 5 years and I’ve come to learn a lot from the patients and their families. One thing that amazes me is the strength and bravery demonstrated by many children and young adults when someone in their family is dying. I remember one family with an 8-9 year-old granddaughter who stepped up to the plate for the family, dressing wounds and caring for her grandfather as no other member of the family could. In another family, a 25 year-old daughter who had lupus herself took care of her dad, dressing deep decubitus ulcers in his coccyx. It was very difficult for her, and she cried while doing it, but she kept with it. Working for Hospice, I’ve seen a lot of amazing events that most people don’t get to see.
Support is a very important benefit that our team provides to our patients and families. Throughout our patients’ journey, emotions are very chaotic. And there is one thing I’ve come to learn throughout this experience and that is – No matter where we come from, what we look like, whatever our differences are, we are here for one another.
